Logging Unit ABF-14

Acoustic logging tool ABF 14

The ABF 14, an acoustic logging tool, which gives images of the borehole wall. The principle of the tool is that a narrow pulsed acoustic beam scans the borehole wall in a tight helix as the tool moves up the borehole.

A rotating transducer sends pulses of acoustic energy towards the borehole wall. The acoustic energy is reflected from the borehole wall and the ampli-tude and travel time of the reflected signal are measured with the same transducer which generates the acoustic beam. The ABF equipment consists of a logging tool, a surface panel, a PC with a special interface and the logging software.

The ABF 14 tool measures up to 256 amplitude and travel time values per revolution and up to 6 revolutions per second can be realized. As the tool moves along the borehole a complete 360 degree image of the borehole wall is produced. A magnetic sensor is used to orientate the image. The travel time image provides detailed information about deviations in the borehole shape from the ideal circular cross section.

FAQ, General Conditions and Accuracy

  • The quality and accuracy is not dependent on the mud density but on any hard particles (e.g. sand, stones) which might be in the mud
  • The ABF scanner can be used for the inspection of cased and open boreholes
  • All tools are available for single or multi conductor cable
  • All tools can be used like a multi arm calliper (254 arms)
  • Providing the full set of 8 springs for each centraliser, the tool can be used in non vertical wells up to 45°
  • Slits with a width of 2 mm will be detected
  • Holes with a diameter of approx. 5 mm will be detected
  • Corrosion with a depth of approx. 2 mm will be detected.

Available Tools

  • ABF 14/1 Acoustic Borehole Scanner for fluid filled boreholes
  • ABF 14/G Acoustic Borehole Scanner for gas filled boreholes
  • ABF 14/M Acoustic Borehole Scanner for use in harsh mud

Applications

  • Provides images of rock texture
  • Detects fractures, vugs and washouts
  • Thin bed detection
  • Bedding determination (diameter)
  • Casing inspection
  • Cross sections of boreholes and pipes (calliper)
  • Locates casing corrosion, deformations and perforations
